SNP5.14 — The Questions of the Young Brahmin Udaya
To the meditator sitting free from dust,
(said the venerable Udaya)
Who has done what is to be done, who is free from taints,
Who has gone beyond all phenomena:
I have come with a question.
Tell me of liberation through final knowing,
The breaking apart of ignorance.
The abandoning of desire for sensual pleasures,
(Udaya, said the Fortunate One)
And of displeasure, both of these;
The dispelling of dullness,
The warding off of restlessness.
Purified by equanimity and mindfulness,
Preceded by reflection on the Dhamma:
This I declare as liberation through final knowing,
The breaking apart of ignorance.
By what is the world bound?
What is its wandering?
By the abandoning of what
Is it called extinguishment?
The world is bound by relishing;
Thought is its wandering.
By the abandoning of craving
It is called extinguishment.
For one living mindfully in what way
Does consciousness cease?
We have come to ask the Fortunate One;
Let us hear your words.
By not relishing feeling,
Internally and externally;
For one living mindfully in this way,
Consciousness ceases.
The questions of the young brahmin Udaya are the thirteenth.
