SN22.64 — The Discourse on Conceiving

Originating in Sāvatthī.

Then a certain disciple, after approaching and sitting to one side, addressed the Blessed One:

Venerable sir, may the Blessed One teach me the Dhamma in brief... so that I may dwell ardent and resolute.

Conceiving, disciple, one is bound by Māra;

not conceiving, one is freed from the Evil One.

It is understood, Blessed One, it is understood, Fortunate One.

But how, disciple, do you know the meaning of what was spoken by me in brief?

Form, venerable sir, when conceived, binds one to Māra;

not conceiving it, one is freed from the Evil One.

Feeling...

Perception...

Formations...

Consciousness, when conceived, binds one to Māra;

not conceiving it, one is freed from the Evil One.

This is how, venerable sir, I know the meaning of what was spoken by the Blessed One in brief.

Good, good, disciple.

It is good that you know the meaning of what was spoken by me in brief.

Form, disciple, when conceived, binds one to Māra;

not conceiving it, one is freed from the Evil One.

Feeling...

Perception...

Formations...

Consciousness, when conceived, binds one to Māra;

not conceiving it, one is freed from the Evil One.

This is how the meaning of what was spoken by me in brief should be understood.

And that disciple became one of the arahants.
